LU Land at Sustainability Week: Exploitation of agricultural land - are we taking sufficient consideration of the different values of land?

10 April 2024 08:15 to 10:15 | Seminar

Agricultural land has many socio-economic values that are difficult to estimate. For example, it contributes to a vibrant countryside, it can store carbon in the soil, it is vital for our current and future food supply and can be exploited to build housing, commercial activities and solar parks. When deciding how to use the land, these values need to be weighed against each other. But how are trade-offs between the different values of land managed today? Do the right tools exist to reduce the risk of over exploitation or are new methods and solutions required?
