World leading research on biodiversity and ecosystem services in a changing climate

- addressing society's need for knowledge to tackle some of the most complex social-ecological challenges of our time

Engaging about 300 researchers at Lund University and the University of Gothenburg, BECC brings together scientists from the natural and social sciences. Together we provide a scientific basis for the sustainable management of ecosystems and biodiversity.

Listen to some of the members of BECC, and get to learn a bit more about the research that we conduct and its relevance for society.

Scientists from different research background

Societies abilities to tackle the complex social-ecological questions we face today depend on excellent research and the integration of it into management practices and policy development. BECC belive that, if we are to solve these questions, it is only through multiple research disciplines and methods that we together have the possibility to provide answers. We perform research essential to understanding the combined consequences of anthropogenic emissions, climate change and land-use change on biodiversity and ecosystem services on local, regional, national and global scales. Together we provide a scientific basis for the sustainable management of ecosystems and biodiversity. Therefore, BECC consists of scientists from different research backgrounds and include:

  • natural and social sciences,
  • observational data and modelling,
  • basic and applied research,
  • intradisciplinary, interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary takes on research questions, and
  • matters of regional, national or international interest.

Vision

Our vision is to provide a world-leading research environment that brings together excellent research and training at Lund University and the University of Gothenburg to address our society's need for knowledge about the dynamics between biodiversity and ecosystem services in a rapidly changing world. The knowledge generated by BECC serves the integration of biodiversity and ecosystem services into policy development, decision-making and praxis, from local to global levels.

Why does biodiversity matter? How do ecosystems work and how do they affect us? This film explains how it all fits together - we are all part of nature.

Aims

In particular, BECC aims to:

  • assess the combined consequences of anthropogenic emissions, climate and land-use change on biodiversity and ecosystem services and provide a basis for informed societal responses, with a focus on critical changes in forest, agricultural, urban and arctic ecosystems. Including interactions between terrestrial and aquatic systems.
  • support local, national and global policymakers through the scientific evaluations of policy options, including adaptation and mitigation strategies to global change, the conservation of biodiversity and resilience of ecosystems and their services.
  • create synergies and added value to global change research by developing and bringing together theories and methods from different disciplines such as biology, economics, environmental science, geology, political science and physical geography, and by integrating stakeholder experience in the research process.

Financing

BECC receives 25 million SEK annually in direct funding from the Swedish Government. External funding and co-funding by the universities amounts to about 115 million each year.
