Continuous cover forestry in practice - excursion
Continuous-cover forestry has the potential to enhance the ability to achieve multiple objectives in forests. However, there is still a lack of knowledge on how different types of forests can be best converted to this practice. Stiftelsen Skånska Landskap, which manages 11,000 hectares of forest land in Skåne, aims to achieve several goals simultaneously. Climate adaptation, biodiversity and recreation are all high priorities, while the foundation also relies on forest production for income. They are actively working to convert their forests to continuous-cover forestry.
As part of a project led by Skogforsk, Skånska Landskap has been commissioned to test different methods for this conversion. They have engaged various stakeholders and researchers in the process. The interdisciplinary project ForestPath at Lund University has been tasked with determining how 7 hectares of forest land can be transformed to continuous-cover forestry. We have focused on gradually removing spruce trees, promoting biodiversity and minimizing greenhouse gas emissions, while also creating a “scenic path”. The initial felling takes place in early October.
We now invite you to an excursion visiting this forest land!
During this excursion, we will travel to Breanäs by Lake Immeln in Northeasetern Skåne, to share and demonstrate the choices we have made, explain our reasoning, and invite discussion. Emma Sandell Festin from Skånska Landskap will provide background on the project and their perspective on multifunctional forestry, and will participate in the discussion. This is a unique opportunity to explore continuous-cover forestry for multiple goals in practice!
We will depart from Lund at 8:30 and return around 16:30. Lunch and fika will be provided. Warmly welcome to join!
Please register in the link below before 17th Oct.
