Writing policy briefs - why, when, and how?

Do you want to learn more about how to relate your research to sustainable development and initiate collaborations with researchers in other fields? The Strategic Research Areas continue with their series of workshops focusing on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The workshop is a joint collaboration with the LU Agenda 2030 Graduate School and the Pufendorf Institute Advanced Study Group "Wildfires in the Anthropocene".

Researchers are increasingly encouraged to communicate their results to policymakers. Doing so is very different from writing scientific or popular science articles. In this workshop we will hear about different perspectives on the policy process in different context and fields (morning session). We will also get some insights about best practices, templates, and other things to think about when writing policy briefs. The practical part of the workshop (afternoon session) includes reading and discussing examples of policy briefs, and then reading and discussing policy briefs that the participants have drafted before the workshop.

The aim of this workshop is to provide an overview of research-based policy briefs, including formatting and writing conventions, identifying and disseminating to an audience, and evaluating their impact.

The event can be attended as a half-day or full-day workshop:

Morning Session (9:15 - 12:00)
- Presentations from experts on the policy process
- Understanding the importance of policy briefs
- Describing the process of writing a policy brief
- Sharing good examples from various research environments
- Overview of existing support and experience at Lund University
Afternoon Session w/ Lunch (12:00 - 16:00)
- Guided session with practical aim to support those writing policy briefs
- Examining and discussing good examples
- Providing tips and techniques to increase the impact of the policy brief
- Opportunity to discuss and receive peer feedback

To participate in the afternoon session, one must submit a draft policy brief of approx. one page, summarising the main message and target audience by Thursday 26 January. More information will be provided to those that register for the afternoon session.

The workshop will be held onsite and in English.

Venue

The workshop will take place at the Pufendorf Institute at Lund University. The entrance is located at Biskopsgatan 3. The venue is just inside the front entrance - you can't miss it!

Target Audience

The workshop is open to all staff at Lund University including researchers, doctoral students, and research coordinators/administrators. If space is limited, preference will be given to those from any of the Strategic Research Areas (SRA's), the LU Agenda 2030 Graduate School, and members of the Pufendorf Institute Advanced Study Group "Wildfires in the Anthropocene".
