Theme meeting: Biochar application to Swedish soils: patterns, potential, and limitations.

biokol
Theme meeting
The autumn theme meeting of 'Carbon & climate change' will focus on biochar, its possibilities and limitations

Possibilities and limitations of biochar application to Swedish soils

Biochar (pyrolyzed biomass) as a soil amendment has the prospect to long-term store carbon belowground, and can alter soil fertility and climate gas emissions. In this workshop, we will discuss possibilities and limitations with the use of pyrolysed biomass in Swedish soils – How large a role can biochar get for climate change mitigation work?  Which ecosystems or economical niches have largest potential for a successful implementation? What happens to soil processes after biochar application – can we predict long-term effects? What conflicts will arise, e.g. with parent materials, and are there creative ideas to solve those? What climate narratives can arise of biochar, do they have the potential to involve the public?
