BECC funding for guest researchers

Open for all BECC associated researchers. Application can be submitted at any time.

Researchers affiliated with BECC are welcome to apply for support through BECC funds and facilities to invite guest researchers to work in areas that fall within the scientific framework and interests of BECC or for own short guest research visits, either to a BECC-environment outside their own university or for a BECC PhD-student to an external university (see below for details). The overall aim of guest researchers is to further strengthen research areas and research groups within BECC.

Guest researchers fall into four different categories:

1.    Prominent researchers from other universities or similar, that bring in critical knowledge to enable development of BECC research at LU and UGOT.

2.    Former BECC-affiliated researchers currently employed at other universities or similar, that strive to develop collaboration between BECC and their new research groups.

3.    Current BECC affiliated researcher visits between LU and UGOT with the intention to deepen collaboration between BECC research groups at LU and UGOT.

4.    BECC PhD-students research visits to a university or research organisation external to LU/UGOT.

Purpose

• To further strengthen research areas and research groups within BECC.

• To bring in new scientific ideas and methodologies not previously represented within the research of BECC.

• To inspire other BECC researchers, including PhD and undergraduate students. Thus, guest researchers are encouraged to e.g., give seminar(s) in BECC and participate in activities also beyond those of BECC.

• To conduct research that results in a product or action (e.g., paper, review, workshop, seminar, develop new research projects or strategies etc.).

• To develop long-term research collaboration between BECC research groups at LU and UGOT and research groups at other universities

Guidelines for proposal

External guest researchers and former BECC-affiliated researchers

•    The incoming guest researcher must be affiliated to a university or research organisation other than those directly engaged in BECC. An external guest researcher can also be affiliated with non-academic organizations such as agencies or industry.

•    The guest researcher should be a prominent researcher, usually professor or lecturer.

•    Precedence will be given to guest researchers who bring in complementary knowledge to BECC, e.g. by strengthening BECC’s cross-disciplinary potential.

•    Period of stay:

-An external guest researcher can spend a period of between 2 weeks and 6 months full-time at LU or UGOT associated to one or more of the research groups involved in BECC.

-A former BECC-affiliated researcher can spend up to 3 months at LU or UGOT.

•    Covered expenses related to the visit (including overhead):

-Accommodation.

-Other expenses related to the research visit (see appendix).

-One journey to and from home to Lund or Gothenburg.

•    Guest researchers may be placed at CEC (LU) or at another department currently involved in BECC. In either case, provision of office space and facilities such as telephone, network access etc. is the responsibility of the hosting center/department. (For guest researchers placed at CEC, temporary/part-time office space may also be provided for researchers from the host department collaborating with the guest.)

•    Please consider gender and diversity when suggesting guest researchers. Also consider suggesting researchers that complement existing research areas and researchers, and research areas where existing BECC research has a gap.

•    It is advisable that guest researchers have secured permission for absence from his or her home organisation before applying.

•    Submission of application:

•    Applications are to be submitted by the intended host, who must be a researcher affiliated with BECC. Direct applications from prospective guest researchers will not be considered. Application should be approved by head of department.

Research visits by current BECC associated researchers between BECC-universities and PhD-students to external universities

•    For visits between BECC universities, the outgoing guest researcher could be a BECC PI, a BECC-affiliated researcher/postdoc or a BECC-affiliated PhD-student.

•    For research visits by PhD-students to external universities, the PhD-student must be supervised by a BECC PI.

•    Period of stay: 2 -8 weeks.

•    Covered expenses related to the visit (including overhead):

-Other expenses related to the research visit (appendix)

-Accommodation.

-One return trip from home university to the external university.

•    For research visits between LU and UGOT provision of office space and facilities such as telephone, network access etc. is the responsibility of the hosting department. (For researchers placed at CEC, temporary/part-time office space may also be provided for researchers from the host department collaborating with the guest.)

•    Submission of application:

-BECC researchers themselves apply for a stay at LU/UGOT.

-BECC-PIs apply for funding for their PhD-student research visit to a university or research organisation (not LU or UGOT).

-Applications should be approved by head of hosting department.

•    It is advisable that the researcher has secured permission for absence from his or her home organisation before applying.

Submission and decision on applications

• Applications should be submitted using the relevant template, see below.

• Applications that are incomplete or do not follow the structure of the template will be returned unconsidered.

• Applications may be submitted at any time but at least 3 months before the planned start of the exchange.

• Decisions on proposed guest researchers are taken by the BECC board and normally take 1-2 months to process during term time.

Other available funding from BECC

If you are planning a workshop together with the guest researcher, it is possible to apply for extra funding. Find more information here (link). If relevant, you may find outreach and communication funding possibilities here (link).
