Continuous Cover Forestry
In this BECC workshop, we will give an overview of the status of continuous cover forestry (CCF) in Sweden, with regards to definitions, distribution and policies. We will also give examples of different aspects of how CCF can affect economic, ecological and social values, and discuss knowledge gaps. The aim is to identify what role BECC can play in research related to CCF and discuss ideas for future projects.
Questions on how to use forests to meet set targets on climate and biodiversity are currently high on the European agenda. More than half of Sweden's surface area is covered by forest, the largest proportion of which is production forest (spruce or pine) that is clearcut at regular intervals. Three percent of the Swedish production forest is managed in such a way that no clear-cutting occurs. Mixed forests managed with CCF have been highlighted as a way to increase biodiversity, carbon sequestration and social values. To increase the area of CCF, there is a need of knowledge about how to manage forests to reach a desired state and supporting governance structures.
Target audience
A wide range of expertise will be needed to make progress on this multi-stakeholder issue. The BECC environment includes many researchers who work with forests, forest owners and forest policies, for example through modeling, field measurements or interviews. Together we have the potential to contribute more to the knowledge building about CCF than we do today. We would therefore like to invite all of you to this workshop.
Registration is now closed.
