Four solutions to the climate crisis: restoration of wetlands
Drained peatlands emit large amounts of greenhouse gases. By restoring them to wetland, emissions can be reduced and the wetland can even become a carbon sink - making rewetting an important partial solution to the climate crisis. But why isn't wetland restoration happening faster? What can be done to unlock the full potential of the measure and what obstacles stand in the way?
This seminar will explore the challenges of rewetting and the opportunities to speed up the process.
Speakers
Åsa Kasimir, one of Sweden's leading wetland researchers based at the University of Gothenburg and associated with the strategic research area BECC (Biodiversity and Ecosystem services in a Changing Climate).
Hillevi Eriksson, climate and bioenergy specialist at the Swedish Forest Agency. Hillevi Eriksson works with the Swedish Forest Agency's government assignment to implement measures to restore drained wetlands. Hillevi is also a member of the BECC stakeholder reference group.
The seminar is moderated by Dr. Johanna Stadmark at Lund University.
