The first day of the new year is also the first day of opening of the Gothenburg Global Biodiversity Centre. The aim of the center is for researchers and students in the field of biodiversity to collaborate more and also to explain better to the public and decision makers why the work to protect species and nature is so important.
The center will be hosted by the Department of Biological and Environmental Sciences at the University of Gothenburg, other participating departments at GU include; the Department of Biological and Environmental Sciences, the Department of Earth Sciences, the Department of Marine Sciences, the Herbarium, the Centre for Sea and Society and the Linnaeus Centre for Marine Evolutionary Biology. From other organizations there will Initially be collaboration involving 13 different institutions in west Sweden, including Gothenburg Botanical Garden, the Maritime Museum & Aquarium, the Gothenburg Museum of Natural History, the Nordens Ark Zoo, the Universeum science center, Havets Hus and Chalmers University of Technology.
‘The work at the center will be based on four pillars: discovery, learning, exploration and protection. More specifically, this implies expanded research through biological inventories and sampling, modernization of the laboratory environment for sequencing of species and more collaborations.’ Says Professor Alexandre Antonelli
In addition to research the center is aiming to become an active advisor towards government organizations and also engage and enlighten the public on what is happening regarding biodiversity.
