BECC Lighthouse
Only for PIs. Call closes 13 June 2025.
What is a BECC Lighthouse?
A BECC Lighthouse Project addresses the big questions of our time revolving around Biodiversity and Ecosystem services in a Changing Climate. It typically brings together a focused consortium of BECC Principle Investigators (PIs) of varying background who collaborate closely, and meet regularly to discuss, analyze and progress on the chosen challenge. The key to a successful BECC Lighthouse lies in the engagement and time BECC PIs invest in the set-out tasks.
A BECC Lighthouse does not primarily produce new data, but works with existing knowledge, datasets, and information, to create new concepts and research directions. A BECC Lighthouse is welcome to connect to both international scientific networks and Swedish/international stakeholders, however, it is possible to put a larger focus towards one of those. Typical outcomes from a BECC Lighthouse are conceptual papers, meta-analysis and synthesis papers, policy briefs, roadmaps for societal change, or contributions to national organizations or intergovernmental bodies like IPCC or IPBES. A BECC Lighthouse is also encouraged to engage in popular scientific publications, media contributions, and larger grant applications formed from ideas developed by the Lighthouse. A BECC Lighthouse typically lasts for one year, but prolongation may be discussed in very successful cases.
A BECC Lighthouse project receives administrative support for organizing schedules, meetings and symposia, stakeholder interactions, and communication.
Who can apply?
A BECC Lighthouse Project is a consortium of BECC PIs (4-8 PIs per Lighthouse) that want to dedicate time to a specific BECC-relevant scientific and societally important challenge.
A BECC Lighthouse is welcome to invite international high-profile researchers into its activities, the Lighthouse will stand for the costs of their visit. It is also recommended to actively involve junior members (PhD students and postdocs) from the groups or networks of the PI’s research teams, whose projects align with the Lighthouse project, and who are willing to dedicate work time during a focus period (see below) within the Lighthouse. A BECC Lighthouse is also welcome to invite relevant stakeholders into the network, BECC will stand for the costs associated with these interactions. BECC Lighthouses are encouraged to engage BECC PIs from different research groups and/or among our two universities (LU and UGOT).
