Exploring New Research Horizons in the Alps

Hanna Ekström på studieresa i alperna

PhD student in Environmental Science, Hanna Ekström, shares her experiences from a study visit to Campus Alpin and the Land Use and Climate Change research group in Garmisch-Partenkirchen. From inspiring interdisciplinary exchanges to strengthening future collaborations, the trip offered both academic and personal rewards.

Hi Hanna Ekström,

You recently returned from study visit to Campus Alpin and the Land use and climate change research group in  Garmisch-Partenkirchen. Tell us more about the trip!

What was the most rewarding experience you took away from your study trip?

It was very inspiring to be in a group where everybody studies land use issues from different perspectives! Doing an interdisciplinary PhD, I've struggled with finding communities where I can discuss all the different parts of my project. Here I found similarities to what everyone was doing, which was exciting! And then, going to work by the foot of the Alps is really something!

In what way has the trip influenced your work or your future research plans?

By the end of the trip, we could discuss preliminary results from my study, and I now feel much better equipped for the continued work. I also felt that I could strengthen and develop meaningful connections for future projects.

Why would you recommend other PhD:s to apply for funding to make a visit to an external university?

It was great to take part of a different research environment and it's such a big difference to be in the same room with people you want to collaborate with. When it comes to the application, if you are eligible, I think you have a very good chance with the BECC funding!
