Post-doctoral fellow in biosphere-atmosphere interactions

The research concerns the ability of ecosystem carbon fluxes to adapt to changes in the frequency and intensity of drought-rainfall events. The main tasks of the project will be framed around the:

  1. characterization of the disproportional CO2 pulses induced by rainfall events
  2. identification of mechanisms governing these emissions, and
  3. quantification of the contribution of these short-term pulses to the annual ecosystem carbon budget.

For this, we are looking for a highly-motivated candidate who is specialized in ecosystem fluxes and functioning, with in-depth and substantiated experience of measurements and analyses of greenhouse gas data based on eddy-covariance techniques, and experience in handling large data sets.

Post-doctoral fellow in Microbial Ecology of Arctic Ecosystems

The aim of the project is to determine the effects of exacerbated intensity and frequency of freeze-thaw cycles (FTCs) on the carbon cycling in arctic biological soil crusts (BSCs) with particular focus on microbial fitness, recovery and related physiological traits at the organism scale. 

The main duties involved in a post-doctoral position is to conduct research, consisting of field work in Arctic Research stations located in Sweden and Greenland, sample preparation for both bulk and microscale laboratory experiments, related data analyses and scientific writing.

Postdoctoral Fellow in Environmental Science

A climate mitigation and adaptation strategy applicable for Sweden is rewetting of drained peatlands, which can both aid in mitigating greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and create a landscape with higher biodiversity being more resilient to drought/flooding and forest fires. The main aim with this project is to improve our understanding of the impact this climate adaptation and mitigation strategy has on the activity of soil microbial communities, and in turn their influence on the land atmosphere exchange of GHG. 

The main duties of the postdoc are to develop and run to this research project independantly. This task will include study design field sampling, RNA extractions and post sequencing bioinformatics. In addition, the postdoc is expected to create collaborations and share scientific findings to the broader community. The work duties can also include teaching and other departmental duties (no more than 20%).

Postdoctoral Fellow in the conservation of biodiversity and ecosystem services

Heatwaves induced by climate change constitute an increasing threat to insect communities. Yet, conservation efforts to mitigate the impact of heatwaves on biodiversity and related ecosystem services are still sparse. This project aims to evaluate the potential of modifying microclimates with trees and shrubs as an ecosystem-based climate adaptation to increase the resilience of wild bee communities and crop pollination to heatwaves.

The research project will include:

  • Performing a mesocosm study to evaluate how pollination by wild bees under heatwaves is affected by microclimates.
  • Conducting a policy study, where we assess the feasibility and economic costs of creating microclimates with trees and shrubs as a climate adaptation action on farmland.
  • Using an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) and field surveys to investigate how microclimates affect the richness and abundance of wild bees in agricultural landscapes, as well as pollination of wild plants and agricultural crops.
